None of which I cite as an indictment, necessarily, of those who, according to the Church, have placed themselves in schism. Even if, in some cases, the responsibility for that schism is theirs, or partly theirs. Martin Luther, for instance, was reacting to some very real corruption in the Catholic Church when he placed himself outside her authority, theologically speaking. Maybe he wouldn’t have strayed as far as he had into error, in other words, had his confrères, or his brothers and sisters in Christ, been more assiduous in following the ‘straight and narrow’ path, and lived more exemplary lives.
