For a long time her preoccupations all involve how she might ‘get back’ to November 19th — to the sequence of days as they used to proceed, and to her ‘normal life.’ But after a while, having exhausted all her ideas, she begins to lose hope. Or anyway to resign herself to the possibility that this new situation, this fissure in time, or malfunction of it, might be permanent, and that there may be no ‘escape’ from it.
